It is another Friday and another insincere if not misleading sermon by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This Friday, in Villa Somalia mosque, the president encouraged national unity and good governance. He rejected clanism and societal division and said, “his government belongs to the people and the people only.” He added, “I as your president don’t have a hatred for any particular clan.”
Once again the president has shown his two conflicting personalities. In private, the president continues to be as divisive as ever pitting one Somali group against the other, and without a second thought seeks to isolate and sanction anyone who doesn’t bow down to his instruction, South West and Puntland States of Somalia in particular. However, in public the president is as charming as could be, and presents himself as a patriotic leader who cares for his people more than anyone else.

With Puntland’s latest arms shipment in mind, the president discouraged purchase of what he called ‘illegal arms” but using public funds continues to arm his subclan to the teeth. The president tells the nation that Somalia needs good governance and that it is up to the leader to bring his agenda forward and convince his people to follow him. He adds that since no one can be forced to follow the direction he set the nation for, the nation should trust his leadership and believe in his agenda. However, the president never sets an agenda that unifies the nation and is continuously creating division between the clans and between the center and the periphery.
From today’s Friday Prayer Sermon at Villa Somalia Mosque, it is becoming quite clear that the president isn’t only lying but is misleading the nation. And if he is unaware of that simple fact, he isn’t fit to lead as he is totally not in tune with the public mood and the lack of trust in him and his government.
Already accused as the most corrupt Somali leader, President Hassan Sheikh, as one of Somalia’s leading narcotics traffickers, incentivizes immorality and demoralizes the public in the house of God on a weekly quota of lies and personal delusions.
