Unaddressed grievances and a lack of grassroots reconciliation has led to rising clan conflict in the Hirshabelle region and the local authorities have taken notice.
While speaking to the press, Abdi Dahir Guure, the Interior Minister for the Hirshabelle state called upon the Federal Government of Somalia to urgently act and take decisive action to halt the inter-clan violence in the Middle Shabelle region.
In recent months, heavily armed tribal militias have been feuding in the vicinity of Rage-Ceele and Adale, leading to deaths and displacement, with the situation continuing to deteriorate.
Mr. Guure revealed that his ministry had made several attempts to make peace between the warring communities and called on further support from the internationally recognized government based in Mogadishu.
Clan violence has been a reoccurring problem that has been persisting in Somalia since the collapse of the central government in 1991, made worse by a lack of accountability and illicit arms floating around throughout the country. Clan violence has also been exacerbated by ill-advised Federal Government of Somalia policy, as the government has provided weapons to certain local clan militias known as ‘the Macawisley’ to counter al-Shabaab.
