The speakers from both houses of parliament along with MP’s from both the Lower House and Senate held a meeting today in the Somali capital, Mogadishu to discuss ways to review the constitution.
Abdullahi Hashi, the speaker of the senate along with Aden Madobe, the speaker of the Lower House led the meeting and discussed ways on advancing the review of the constitution, which is code for “changing the constitution”.
The status of the provisional federal constitution is a hot button issue in Somalia as different segments of society remain at odds with the legitimacy of the constitution and certain laws in the constitution.
However, despite these concerns both speakers of parliament and lawmakers (MP’s) are trying to go forward with a controversial initiative to amend the constitution, which many suspect the Federal government led by Hassan Sheikh in being behind the agenda.
The motives behind the amending of the constitution are for president Hassan Sheikh to secure a term extension and also weaken the federal system, many political analysts suspect.
Its unclear if the Federal Government will succeed in amending the constitution without any say or in-put from Federal Member States and the various political stakeholders in the country.
