Latest Garxajis clan militia defeat of Somaliland army puts Muse Bihi between a rock and hard place

At the beginning, it was the stone throwing youth of SSC-Khatumo that evicted the highly touted Somaliland occupation army from Laascaanood. Then the newly established SSC civil defense forces took it over where the youth left it and continued on with their onslaught on Somaliland forces, until they have taken out all of Somaliland’s leading military officers in the Sool region. Now SSC-Khatumo civil defense forces are facing off the remnants of a highly demoralized Somaliland army in and around Goojacadde, Somaliland’s once largest military garrison in Sool region.

Meanwhile, for all intents and purposes, in Sool region, Somaliland is on the brink of a total defeat.

Enter Gacan Libaax armed movement of the Garxajis clan, the largest and the most dominant of the Isaaq group of clans. The clan is on record opposing Muse Bihi’s attack on Laascaanood, and asked all its clan members not to participate the war in Sool. Having been under the thump of Habar Awal led ‘Baha Iidoor’ clan alliance (Jeegaanta Somaliland) since the founding of Somaliland, once the Garxajis clan sensed weakness in Muse Bihi’s Baha Iidoor dominated army, the clan made its move, declared an armed movement against Somaliland, and set base on Gacan Libaax mountain range, a strategic location about 100 KM east of Hargeisa and lying in between the triangle of Hargeisa-Berbera-Burco.

With Garxajis armed movement fully opposing Muse Bihi and Somaliland’s declaration of independence, 32 year old Somaliland officially entered an unchartered territory, into civil war arena, and on the brink of a total collapse.

Today, that collapse took another step forward, as Muse Bihi’s UK funded RRU special police force along with 10 technicals (vehicles armed with anti-aircraft guns) of his clansmen that he quietly withdrew from Goojacadde went on the attack to try and tame the Gacan Libaax Movement in and around Go’da Yar village of Gacan Libaax mountain terrain, about 120 KM east of Hargeisa. It didn’t end well for Muse and the RRU. It is now being reported that a high-ranking RRU officer along with 9 Somaliland soldiers were killed in today’s action, 17 injured, and 3 vehicles destroyed.

On the Gacan Libaax armed movement side, so far there are no known fatalities, and none are reported by the movement spokesman; however, it is now being reported that General Oofwareen, leader of the armed front, has been slightly grazed by a bullet on his left arm.

In the major towns of Hargeisa, Burco, and Ceerigaabo, all day violent demonstrations have rocked Somaliland, and some Ceerigaabo and Burco police stations were taken over by supporters of the armed movement. Hargeisa’s Qudhac Dheer police station was just sacked by demonstrators, and prisoners, most of them of the Garxajis clan, were all freed and let out of their jail cells.

In Dooxa Hargeisa, armed men in groups of five are being spotted. Security at Somaliland state house area is on high alert with no one allowed near that area.

Latest reports also indicate that more armed technicals and soldiers are being evacuated from Goojacadde to Hargeisa and to Gacan Libaax. Meanwhile, with the softening of Goojacadde defenses as more troops are needed in Hargeisa, SSC-Khatumo troop movements are tonight being reported near Goojacadde and Maraaga area.

In Hargeisa, people are tonight loudly and without fear discussing if Muse Bihi’s army is capable of fighting on three fronts, the Sool front, the Gacan Libaax one, and most importantly, the latest front in Hargeisa, where new hostilities are now being reported, and a young man is shot dead by the police in one of Hargeisa’s neighborhoods. Clan tensions in Hargeisa are an all time high.

With the noose tightening on President Muse Bihi by the minute, the choices facing him tonight are ominous. Will he choose to defend Hargeisa and his State House from a Garxajis clan militia that pledges allegiance to the Somali flag, or will he choose to defend Goojacadde from his number one enemy, SSC-Khatumo, which vows to protect the Union at all costs? Or as some Hargeisa rumors have it tonight, will he flee to Djibouti via his clan stronghold of Gabiley? Whatever choice President Muse makes, his political survival is in dire straits, and all the signs are pointing out to the imminent end of Somaliland as we now know it, and end to its 32 year old separatism.
