In another political shocker, President Hassan Sheikh is reported to be backing the Raila Odinga of Kenya candidacy for the African Union Chairmanship. Fawzia Yusuf Adam, an MP who was Somalia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and a former Foreign Minister, is the Somalia candidate and so far has single-handedly and without any support from Villa Somalia garnered support from the delegates of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).
According to some politicians, this betrayal was to be expected, as President Hassan Sheikh has previously because of personal business interests in Tanzania backed the candidacy of a Tanzanian candidate over MP Marwa Abdi Bashir for the IPU Presidency.

In a speech after she was defeated, MP Marwa Bashir recounted a list of betrayals by Somalia highest office holders, from the President on down to the Speaker of the People’s Assembly.

MP Kulane who recalls previous betrayals by the President now reports that “President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is pressuring Fawzia Adam to drop her bid for the AU chairperson position in favor of a foreign candidate,” a Kenyan candidate, and worse yet a pro-secession candidate who publicly supports the dismantling of Somalia.
MP Kulane calls the President’s pro-foreign interests politicking “unfortunate” and accuses him of “callous disregard for the interests of the Somali people.”
On the candidacy of Fawzia Adam, MP Kulane in support of Fawzia writes that she “is fit for the job; she has single-handedly run her campaign and managed to lobby massive support for her bid, including from IOC countries on the continent and other nations. She has spent significant resources of her own, while other nations are pushing and funding their candidates for the position.”
MP Kulane reminds the Somali people of President Hassan Sheikh’s previous betrayal when the President “pressured the Honorable Marwa [MP Marwa Bashir] to drop her bid for the World Inter-parliamentary Chairmanship [IPU] in a surprising last-minute show of support for Tanzania.”
Why is President Hassan Sheikh supporting foreign candidates and betraying Somalia’s own candidates? MP Kulane answers that question by accusing the President of using the nation’s highest office as a tool to further his personal and business interests against those of Somalia and the Somali people.

MP Kulane concludes, “In Somalia, we are asking our candidate to drop out because HSM has a certain personal interest that he needs to be taken care of, and a Somali citizen is being thrown under the bus!”
It is not only MP Kulane, but MP Dr. Ali Said Faqi, in support of Fawzia candidacy, encourages everyone to support her. MP Dr. Faqi writes, “Somalia’s candidate, Hon. Fawzia, is not from the establishment, but she brings a wealth of experience. She is determined, dynamic, and embodies the qualities that many African leaders can resonate with. Let’s rally behind Hon. Fawzia and support her bid for the AU chairmanship.”
