As public outcry over Turkey’s control of Somalia public institutions and the Ankara Declaration granting unimpeded sea access to longtime nemesis Ethiopia grows, more Somali lawmakers and intellectuals are pointing fingers at the root cause – a leadership that is tone-deaf, corrupt and willing to auction Somalia to the highest bidder.

In his latest post on X, Federal Government of Somalia MP Abdirahman Abdishakur
isn’t mincing any words and he puts all the blame on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud calling him insatiably corrupt.
Somewhat despondent, MP Abdirahman Abdishakur on his post chillingly writes, “Last year, two powerful images remain vivid in my memory: the sight of a Somali soldier surrendering at the Kenyan border, and the heartbreaking image of a young student girl whose shelter was demolished.”

If you are wondering what makes the MP so hopeless, he goes on to describe what ails Somalia and continues on his post that “The majority of Somalis firmly believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction. With a deteriorating economy and rampant corruption, President HSM is actively enriching himself and working to establish a personal rule centered around him. He has made changes to the constitution and undermined the federal structure of the State. The erosion of public trust in the government has reached its peak, leading to polarization and clan conflicts that are prevalent everywhere. All these factors create a fertile ground for terrorists to thrive.”
In other words, it is the leadership, stupid. The buck stops with the leadership and with President Hassan Sheikh.
Meanwhile, that same leadership, despite public outcry against Turkey, calls President Erdogan and Turkey “brothers in arms,” while Erdogan’s ambassador in Somalia, contrary to established international diplomatic protocols, unceremoniously summons Somalia’s highest ranking officials to his office. All the while Erdogan’s AKP Party cadres in piecemeal takeover Somalia’s public institutions, like the airport, the seaport, the hospitals, and the education centers, and then systematically turn the public institutions to profit centers milking every Somali from his and her last available penny.

How long before the outcry against Erdogan, Turkey and his AKP party cadres turns into “no more turkey in Somalia?” Time will tell, but when and if Turkey is out of Somalia, be warned and expect the same treatment as Macron to West Africa. After six African countries kicked France out of their countries, Macron went tone-deaf and berated African nations for not thanking France. Macron publicly stated, “I think the Africans forgot to thank us. It doesn’t matter it will come with time. Gratitude, I’m well-placed to know it, is a disease not transmissible to humans.”

Known for his confrontational style of diplomacy, Erdogan might even go further than that and call Somalis “ungrateful starving hordes of clans who couldn’t take advantage of their seas and natural resources and who refuse our best friend Ethiopia to make use of these idle resources.”
Of course, Somalia can tolerate harsh words from Erdogan and Turkey, but be warned, Somalia might not be able to tolerate the Syria treatment President Erdogan plans next for Somalia.
