As Puntland decimates ISIS in #Calmiskaad, al-Shabaab in southern Somalia goes from strength to strength. Given Villa Somalia’s silence and total lack of support to Puntland’s war against foreign ISIS jihadists, Somali people are now wondering if Villa Somalia is a help or hindrance to al-Shabaab.
Osman Shiil writes about the group’s growing capabilities and notes that “A new UN report contradicts Somali government claims of weakening Al-Shabaab. The group remains operationally strong, attacking Somali & ATMIS forces while expanding piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Despite military offensives, its capabilities remain intact.”

He continues, “Al-Shabaab’s ties with Yemen’s Houthis are growing. The report says they met twice in 2024, seeking advanced weapons & training. In return, Al-Shabaab increased piracy off Somalia’s coast, disrupting trade & collecting ransoms.”
As for their ever growing revenues, Osman writes, “Al-Shabaab’s revenue surged to $100M-$200M annually. Govt crackdowns in Mogadishu reduced some income, but the group adapted by intensifying taxation in controlled areas. It spends ~70% on ops & 30% on investments.”
