ISIS In Somalia: Fact Or Fiction?
Abukar Arman questions the ISIS narrative

As Puntland wages a fierce battle against ISIS in the caves of #Calmiskaad mountains, fearless Abukar Arman is back scrutinizing the narrative and connecting the dots.

With President Donald Trump’s nominee to be Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard telling the world about the CIA’s Operation Timber Sycamore and the US being the biggest sponsor of terror in the world, and of course Al-Golani’s ISIS, backed by Western and Gulf Monarchs, now controlling Syria, Abukar examines the geopolitical dimensions of the war on terror. He focuses on ISIS in Puntland and the strategic maneuvers of certain middle powers and other powerful nations in pursuit of “their geopolitical objectives through proxies- client states, local militias, foreign mercenaries, and, of course, terrorist groups like ISIS.”

And now as Puntland slowly eliminates foreign jihadists/mercenaries, Abukar questions whose proxies these jihadists with ‘luxury living spaces’ in the mountains could be, and if they have anything to do with illegal mining, other clandestine operations or perhaps even part of Puntland’s ‘blood gold’ exports to the UAE. With intricate web of alliances and woven conflicts, Abukar thinks there is more than meets the eye.

While Bossaso is far from being a “ghost town” as Abukar described, the approaching end of ISIS/foreign mercenaries has led the city bustling with economic activity; however, the growing UAE military bases in the region, from Bossaso, Berbera to the Socotra Archipelago, are raising alarm bells throughout Puntland and Somalia at large.

Concluding “Scrutiny saves lives,” Abukar pleads with Somalis to understand the causes and effects of terrorism and to think critically and not surrender their faculties to fear.
