The deputy president of the Jubaland regional state, Mohamud Sayid Ali, arrived in the city of Luuq in the Gedo region with delegates from Kismayo.
Mr. Ali is the highest ranking Jubaland official to visit the Gedo region in three years after the Jubaland regional state lost control of Gedo in 2020 following an armed insurrection backed by the Federal Government of Somalia.
Gedo has been contested and remains a boiling point. The arrival of the senior Jubaland delegation to Kismayo comes weeks after the authorities in Mogadishu recognized Ahmed Madobe as the legitimate ruler of Gedo, despite opposition from the local communities.
Its unclear how the arrival of Mohamed Sayid Ali will change the dynamics in Gedo, but it isn’t going unnoticed. Barre Hiraale, a former Somali faction leader, has also arrived in Doolow, Gedo to counter any attempts by Jubaland to take control of Gedo region.
Fears are growing in the region, that without restraint and genuine reconciliation, conflict might erupt and engulf the region.
