LAWMAKER TO SOMALI SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: “ACCEPT IMPEACHMENT MOTION AGAINST THE PRESIDENT OR FACE MOTION TO VACATE THE SPEAKERSHIP”

After yesterday’s press conference by former President Sharif Sh Ahmed, Senator Abdi Ismail Samatar, and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur that energized the impeachment motion against President Hassan Sh. Mohamud, a group of 94 plus MPs led by MP Dr. Abib today sent a warning letter to Speaker Aadan Madobe demanding an mmediate action on “impeachment motion against the President” or otherwise face a “motion to vacate the Speaker’s Chair.”

The letter with the backing of 94 plus Members of Parliament, referring to the Speaker’s “continued refusal to accept and register the impeachment motion against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud” and his “failure to convene an emergency session of Parliament,” accuses the Speaker of “not only a flagrant violation of parliamentary procedures” but also a grave dereliction of his constitutional duties as speaker.

The MPs claim that “As outlined in the impeachment motion to be submitted by Members of Parliament in coming days, the actions of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud – including his tacit recognition of Ethiopian naval forces and his failure to defend Somali land and maritime rights – constitute gross violations of the Somali constitution and international law.”

Then comes the warning. The MPs warn Speaker Aadan Madobe, “If you fail to accept and register the impeachment motion and call an emergency session of Parliament within seven (7) days, we will have no choice but to bring a motion to vacate the Speaker’s chair. No one is above the law, including the Speaker of this House. Your continued dishonesty, disregard for parliamentary procedures, and failure to act in the best interest of the nation leave us no other alternative.”

In their letter, the MPs conclude that “This Parliament will not stand by idly as you continue to subvert the rule of law. The era of impunity is over, and accountability must prevail. We await your immediate response and action. Time is running out.”
