President Hassan Sheikh Accused of Systematically Exploiting Public Power and Resources to Bolster His Presidential Party’s Inauguration

MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib, Somalia’s renowned corruption fighter, has come out swinging against the growing push for one-party rule in Somalia. His criticism comes as President Hassan Sheikh launched what he calls a ‘grand political party’, an entity that brings together his cabinet, some federal member states, and the leader of the newly formed SSC-Khatumo administration. Abib warns this coercive and illegal move transgresses the constitution, threatens political pluralism, and could entrench centralized authority, sidelining opposition voices and regional autonomy.

MP Abib, writing to the UN and Somalia’s international partners, requests an urgent response and engagement “regarding systemic and unlawful abuse of public office and state institutions by the leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia, particularly involving the misuse of national security forces, public funds, and coercive power to promote a private political agenda under the banner of the recently inaugurated “Justice and Unity Party”, affiliated directly with the President of the Republic.”

“Despite its name, the “Justice and Unity Party” has presided over the most divisive and corrupt period in Somalia’s post-transition political history. The circumstances surrounding its inauguration event have now crossed serious legal red lines and directly undermine constitutional order, democratic integrity, and donor trust in Somalia’s governance frameworks,” writes MP Abib.

MP Abib concludes that “Somalia’s democratic transition cannot succeed under a regime that subordinates national institutions to personal political ambitions. I urge the international community to stand with the Somali people and democratic institutions – not with those who abuse them.”

With President Hassan Sheikh having already led Somalia to the brink, there is little hope that he will reverse course or heed any advice.
