PRESS RELEASE: Somalia Teeters on the Brink of Civil War Under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Leadership

PRESS RELEASE | Mogadishu, Somalia | 27 September 2024

Somalia is dangerously edging toward civil war under the current leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. His administration’s actions are neither democratic nor visionary, as demonstrated by the controversial appointment of General Asad Diyano as the new Chief of Police. This appointment is widely seen as a deliberate effort to destabilize Puntland State, escalating political tensions in the country. The decision to appoint a Chief of Police with the explicit goal of enforcing unrestrained law and order while promoting political destabilization is a troubling development for Somalia’s future.

In addition, President Mohamud is actively targeting political opposition and potential presidential contenders in Mogadishu, with the explicit aim of provoking a military response from them, further deepening the crisis.

President Mohamud’s misguided agenda appears to be focused on securing his political survival, prioritizing personal ambitions over national unity and progress. His attempts to redesign the electoral process and position himself for re-election have raised serious concerns about the future of democratic governance in Somalia, threatening the country’s stability.

Moreover, with Somalia’s recent accession to the United Nations Security Council as a representative of Africa, there are growing fears that President Mohamud could exploit this prestigious international platform to further his own interests, potentially compromising Somalia’s global reputation and undermining the broader interests of the African continent.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his radical inner circle represent a grave threat to Somalia’s nascent democracy and the rule of law. Their actions could undo years of progress and destabilize the region at a time when national unity is desperately needed.

As Somalia stands at this critical juncture, the international community must remain vigilant and promote diplomatic interventions to prevent further escalation. National unity, dialogue, and transparent governance are essential to steer Somalia toward a stable, prosperous future and away from the path of conflict.

Somalia is heading one of the darkest days in recent times since the collapse of last regime in 1990s and re-ignating new civil war.
