MP Dr. Abdullahi Hashi Abib, one of the few Somali members of parliament who is a staunch advocate of good governance and a renown corruption fighter, has commended President Donald Trump’s delay of foreign aid to Somalia, one of the most corrupt administrations in Africa.
MP Abib wrote to President Trump, “I commend and support 100% your decision Mr. President to implement a 90-day pause on foreign aid, which includes Somalia. This pause presents an opportunity to reflect on systemic challenges that have undermined the effectiveness of foreign assistance and failed to achieve its primary goal: alleviating the suffering of the Somali people.”

Reflecting on the widespread believe that “Foreign aid is when the poor people of a rich country [USA] send money to the rich people [Villa Somalia] of a poor country [Somalia],” MP Abib writes, “For years, foreign aid intended for Somalia has been plagued by widespread corruption and inefficiency. Investigations reveal that approximately 95% of these funds have been misappropriated, with significant sums diverted by U.S.-based contractors, Nairobi-based intermediary agencies, and high-ranking Somali officials. This mismanagement has betrayed the trust of U.S. taxpayers and compounded the struggles of Somali communities, who remain deprived of the support they desperately need. Corruption at leadership levels in Somalia has also eroded public trust in institutions and perpetuated a cycle of poverty and dependency.”
MP Abib tells Trump that foreign aid in its current form isn’t aid at all but perpetuation of poverty, and writes, “As a Member of Parliament in the Federal Republic of Somalia, I find it imperative to address the fundamental shortcomings of the current welfare-based aid model that has permeated Somali society. For decades, this model, introduced in response to the civil war, has systematically eroded the values of hard work, self-reliance, and communal resilience that are deeply rooted in Somali culture.”
Worse yet, MP Abib then reminds President Trump that USA aid in the amount of $1.13 billion provided to Somalia as of January 2025 was never implemented according to intended plan.
Underscoring the intent of U.S. aid dollars to serve their intended purposes and not pilfered by the pervasive corruption prevalent at Villa Somalia, MP Abib emphasizes, “By advocating for a transparent and effective development and humanitarian system, I seek to rebuild public trust and strengthen international partnerships.”
As a fighter of corruption and poor governance, MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib concludes, “We stand ready to work with the United States to build a transparent and effective development and humanitarian system that delivers real results for those in need in Somalia.”
