We are currently witnessing a coordinated and escalating campaign of misinformation and disinformation, primarily driven by two regional actors: Turkey and Qatar.

This campaign is strategically aimed at discrediting and destabilizing Puntland and Somaliland — two regions that have managed to establish relative stability and local governance in the otherwise volatile Horn of Africa.

What is particularly concerning is how this narrative is being shaped through a combination of political propaganda, manipulated media, and misleading opinion pieces — such as the recent article by HSM. In it, various regional flashpoints are conflated: the Red Sea security crisis, the Gulf of Aden, the threat of ISIS, the actions of the Houthi rebels, and more. This patchwork of geopolitical tensions is then used to spin a distorted story implicating Puntland and Somaliland in broader regional conspiracies.

One of the most striking claims involves the alleged presence of Israeli radar systems in the city of Bosaso, supposedly operated by the UAE to conduct military operations in Sudan. These kinds of assertions are not only baseless but are also dangerously inflammatory. They are designed to stoke fear, sow distrust, and undermine diplomatic relations — particularly those involving international partnerships that Puntland and Somaliland have cultivated over the years.

In today’s information ecosystem, where social media and online platforms amplify messages at lightning speed, such falsehoods can quickly gain traction. Without a foundation of critical thinking and independent verification, even well-meaning observers can fall victim to these narratives. That is precisely what these disinformation campaigns rely on: confusion, emotional appeal, and the erosion of trust in local institutions.

We must respond not with silence, but with clarity. It is essential to distinguish between legitimate political critique and deliberate manipulation. #Puntland and #Somaliland — despite their challenges — have demonstrated resilience and a commitment to self-governance. They deserve to be evaluated based on facts, not fiction propagated by geopolitical rivals with vested interests in destabilization.

Ultimately, the international community, regional analysts, and local citizens must remain vigilant against this kind of informational warfare. The cost of ignoring it is far greater than we might assume.
