The Supreme Council of SSC-Khaatumo have issued a roughly worded statement, recanting earlier criticism critical of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Government of Somalia, which initially accused the President of providing cover for Somaliland’s war crimes in Las Anod and ignoring the plight of the people of SSC.
In a shody and what seemed to be hastly written statement issued on Thursday, the Supreme Council emphasized the importance of not equating SSC-Khaatumo’s strive for unity with that of Somaliland’s secessionist claims that aim to partition Somalia.
Garaad Jama Garaad Ali, the supreme leader of the SSC community. recently lambasted Somalia’s president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for not doing enough to end the siege on Las Anod and covertly supporting Somaliland’s secessionist ambitions.
Since the war broke out in Las Anod, the city has witnessed indiscriminate artillery and mortar bombardment with horrific atrocities that are tantamount to war crimes perpetrated by Somaliland. The UN Security Council issued statement condemning the atrocities committed by Somaliland leadership, but any action to be taken is reported to have been held up by President Hassan Sheikh.
Outrage and backlash from the global Somali community has only intensified in recent months over the Federal Government’s silence over the non-stop attacks and deadly shelling by Somaliland, with many viewing the silence as a sign of complicity.
Thursday’s statement by SSC traditional leaders has been overwhelming rejected by the people of SSC, and there are developing stories today in Las Anod that SSC civil defense forces at the front lines have also rejected the statement.
Meanwhile, with huge public pressure and public statements coming from throughout SSC and in the diaspora that ‘the persecuted never apologize for their persecution,’ there are now developing expectations that the recanting statement will soon be rescinded.
