The peril of Somali refugees goes unabated in Kenya

Kenyan authorities have confirmed a polio outbreak at a refugee camp in Garissa county, situated in Kenya’s Somali region (NFD).

The victims are all said to be minors according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with two of the children already paralyzed before catching the disease and a third suffering from Asymptomatic before hand.

The Kenyan ministry of health has begun testing more Somali children at the refugee camp in a bid to counter the spread of the life altering disease.

Furthermore, the US Embassy in Kenya have advised there citizens to get vaccinated prior to traveling to the region,

Garissa county, consisting of one of the three provinces in Kenya’s Somali region has been marred in suffering for decades stretching back beyond the influx of Somali refugees, in which the region remains underdeveloped and neglected by consecutive ruling governments in Nairobi.

The latest polio outbreak attests to that as both Somali refugees and native Somalis of NFD remain on the back burner of health advancements and services compared to other parts of the country.
