After yesterday’s illegal arrest of two Somali members of parliament, Somali MP Dr. Abdillahi Hashi Abib writes to Hon. E. Ms. Millie G. A. Odhiambo, MP – President The IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians. MP Abib writes, “I wish to bring to your attention a deeply troubling incident that occurred in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 19, 2024. Two Members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, MP Hassan Abdi Noor Abdi and MP Ahmed Abdi Koshin, were unjustly arrested by five Kenyan Security Officers and detained in the car Security Officers were driving. During their detention, they were subjected to interrogations, harassment, and threats.”
The two Somali MPs Hon. Hassan Abdinoor and Hon. Ahmed Abdi Koshin, who have reportedly been organizing in Kenya a motion to oust the Prime Minister of Somalia Hamza Abdibarre, have subsequently been released with no charges filed. Even though it is widely believed that their arrest relates to internal Somali clan politicking and intimidations from the Office of Prime Minister Hamza Abdibarre, Kenya Security Services have yet to explain as to why the two Somali MPs were arrested.
Meanwhile, MP Abib implores “the President of the IPU Human Rights Committee and a Member of the Kenyan National Parliament to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and ensure that those responsible, including the complicit security officers, are held accountable. This incident not only undermines Kenya’s reputation but also threatens the principles of justice and democracy that we all hold dear.”
